Why Is the Existing Heating Industry Key to Heat Pump Growth?
As a heating and plumbing installer, you’re likely hearing more and more questions about heat pumps. If you haven’t already, it’s only a matter of time before you do! Below, we explore the growing trend for heat pump installations and why the existing heating industry plays a pivotal role in the technologies adoption.
Bosch Air Source Heat Pump
2024 was a great year for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and MCS. By the end of September, the number of heat pump installations had already surpassed the total for 2023. In December, MCS reported 4,052 heat pump installations bringing the annual total to 57,884. This represents a huge 43% increase compared to 2023.
Over the next three years, we predict a significant boost in heat pump sales, particularly as the Future Homes Standard comes into effect and the government targets 600,000 installations per year by 2028. To put that into perspective, 600,000 installations represents a tenfold increase in the number of heat pump installations from where we are today.
To achieve this target, each of the approximately 43,000 heating installers in the UK would need to complete an average of 14 installations per year. This highlights the crucial contribution of independent installers.
As demand for heat pumps increases, heating installers will be essential to the heat pump revolution. By completing our free heat pump training course, plumbers can tap into the expanding market while supporting the UK's green energy goals.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AS A HEATING INSTALLER?
Well, you could go down the journey of obtaining MCS yourself and completing the necessary design work, MCS paperwork, DNO applications, location assessments, grant administration, the list goes on and you get the idea. Great - you can deal with all of that and proudly put your stamp on the MCS certificate at the end. However, it will require significant time, effort, and money before you can start offering heat pumps to your customers.
Another other to consider is to join the Alto Assured MCS Umbrella Scheme to start installing heat pumps almost immediately. The Alto Energy team look after the design, supply and sign off elements. Allowing you, as a heating installer, to focus on the element you are already able to do – the installation!
Accessing our Alto Assured MCS Umbrella Scheme also opens the door to government incentives and grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
