Heat pump sales surge in 2024

Heat pump sales surge as industry shifts towards renewable heating

Sales of heat pumps in the UK have reached record levels in 2024, with factory gate data from the Heat Pump Association (HPA) showing a 63% increase compared to 2023. A total of 98,468 heat pumps were sold, marking a significant step towards decarbonising home heating.

Strong policy support and market growth

This surge is driven by a combination of government incentives, rising consumer demand, and an expanding network of trained installers. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has played a key role, offering homeowners grants of up to £7,500 to switch from gas boilers to heat pumps. Meanwhile, higher energy prices and a growing focus on energy efficiency have encouraged more households to adopt this technology.

The graph below from the Heat Pump Association illustrates this rapid growth:

UK heat pump sales grew 63% in 2024

Annual heat pump sales (excluding air-to-air heat pumps):

  • 2023: 60,244 units

  • 2024: 98,468 units

  • Growth: 63% year-on-year increase

Supporting installers with free training

A major factor in sustaining this momentum is the availability of skilled installers. To help bridge the skills gap, Alto Energy is actively driving industry growth with our free heat pump training courses. These courses equip heating engineers with the knowledge and practical experience needed to install heat pumps, enabling more professionals to enter the renewable heating sector.

By offering free training, we ensure that installations meet high standards, helping homeowners feel confident in making the switch.

Making MCS compliance easier with Alto Assured

One of the biggest barriers for installers is the requirement for MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accreditation, which is necessary for homeowners to access government funding schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. However, gaining and maintaining MCS accreditation can be time-consuming.

To make things easier, we introduced the Alto Assured MCS umbrella scheme. allowing heating engineers to install heat pumps without needing full MCS certification themselves. By working under our accreditation, installers can focus on their work while still giving customers access to government grants. This initiative is helping to remove obstacles and encourage more engineers to transition from traditional heating systems to renewables.

A bright future for heat pumps

With sales nearing 100,000 units in 2024, the UK's heat pump market is growing faster than ever. Government support, increasing consumer demand, and initiatives like Alto Energy’s free training and MCS umbrella scheme are helping to accelerate the transition to low-carbon heating.

For heating engineers looking to expand their business, now is the perfect time to gain heat pump expertise. With our support, installers can confidently step into the renewable heating market and be part of the UK's shift towards sustainable home heating.
