Throughout the course of 2019, more of Britain’s electricity was generated from zero-carbon energy sources than fossil fuels. This is the first time since the Industrial Revolution - that’s quite a move for renewables!
In May the UK went an impressive 18 days and 6 hours without the use of coal. During the same month there was a generated record level of solar power for 2 consecutive days - this powered around a quarter of the country’s daily consumption of electricity.
10 Year Difference in Electricity Generation
The past decade has seem a major shift in the way electricity has been produced. Whilst wind generated electricity has risen from 1.3% to 18.8% of the total requirement, coal has slumped from 30.4% to 2.5%. The stark contrast is set out in the figures below:
2009
22.8% Zero Carbon
75.6% Coal and Gas
2019
47.9% Zero Carbon
46.4% Coal and Gas
Renewable Heat Incentive Subsidies
Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is still in effect until at least Spring of 2021, so there is still time to get paid to heat your home. As long as you are registered before then, you will receive the full RHI payment over the 7 year payment period.
The Domestic RHI is aimed at private residential self-build and custom build, as well as all retrofit applications, of which all are eligible to make a receive the payments.
The Non-Domestic RHI is similar, however this is aimed at commercial premises and companies, and is paid over 20 years.
